Why these five, and in this order

The ranking follows the order a beginner should actually read them in, not the order of historical importance. Graham comes first because every later book argues with him. Housel comes second because behaviour destroys more returns than bad security selection ever will. Malkiel is third as the empirical check on the two above. Fisher and Munger sit at the end because both assume you already know what a business is worth. Titles were removed this cycle when a shorter book made the same argument more clearly: Security Analysis lost its place to The Intelligent Investor for that reason.

What is the single best investing book for a complete beginner?

The Psychology of Money, not The Intelligent Investor. Graham is the more important book, but Housel is the one a first-time reader finishes. Read Housel, then Malkiel, then come back to Graham within the year.

Is The Intelligent Investor still relevant?

The specific 1949 examples are dead; the framework is not. Margin of safety, the distinction between investment and speculation, and Mr. Market as a metaphor are all still load-bearing. Use the Zweig commentary edition, which annotates the dated passages.

Do I need to read all five?

No. Housel and Malkiel together are enough to build a sensible index portfolio and never look at it again. The other three matter only if you intend to value individual companies.

Why is there no book about options or day trading here?

Because the honest literature on both concludes that most retail participants lose money, and the books that promise otherwise are selling a course. If that changes, the list changes.
